Creative Pumpkin Decorating Ideas

It’s that time of year again, when the leaves start to fall, and Halloween decorations start to go up. One of the essentials for decorating your home for Halloween is putting pumpkins on the front porch. Pumpkin carving and decorating is a great activity for the whole family to do together. Don’t feel like carving, or short on time? Try one of our creative pumpkin decorating ideas below.

Before you start decorating, make sure you’ve prepped the surface of your pumpkin by washing the outside of it, and making sure it’s completely dry. Be sure to put a piece of newspaper or a trash bag under your pumpkin to protect your table. You may also want to grab the supplies you will need based on what fun pumpkin ideas you want to try. There are lists of supplies for each pumpkin decorating idea in each individual idea section.

Paint Your Pumpkin

Supplies Needed:

  • At least two paint colors
  • A brush

  • Glitter
  • Glue
  • Glow-in-the-dark paint

Try painting your pumpkin a fun base color and adding contrasting or complimentary colored dots to it to create a polka-dotted pumpkin. Adding some glitter after you paint your pumpkin can help add some sparkle to it! Just add a clear drying glue after your base paint color has dried and sprinkle the glitter on before the glue dries. You can also outline your polka-dots with glow-in-the-dark paint or completely fill them in for a spooky glow effect.

Make a Unicorn Pumpkin

Supplies Needed:

  • Paint or googly eyes
  • Thin piece of cardboard
  • Hot glue gun
  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Yarn or ribbon

Turn your pumpkin into a magical unicorn! You can use a piece of thin cardboard folded to create a point on one end. Then paint the horn and attach it to the pumpkin with a glue gun. For the eyes, paint them on, or stick googly eyes on with a hot glue gun. Cut the ears out of construction paper with scissors and glue them onto the top of your pumpkin with a hot glue gun. Yarn or ribbon can be used for the unicorn’s mane.

Add a Creepy-Crawly friend

Supplies Needed:

  • Medium or large sized crafting pom-poms
  • Googly eyes
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Hot glue gun

  • Fake spider web

To make the spider, take four pipe cleaners and twist them together in the middle. Take a pom-pom and glue the pipe cleaners at the middle you’ve just twisted to it. To create the legs, bend the pipe cleaners a little more than halfway down on each side so that the spider stands on its own. Next, glue the googly eyes to the front of the spider. You can use two larger googly eyes, or get creative and put smaller ones on for a creepier look. Place the spider on top of the pumpkin next to the stem, or connect it to a fake spider web that’s been draped over your pumpkin.
